The Science of Rainbows

🌈 Why Do Rainbows Appear?

Hi Little Explorer! I'm Bubbles, and I just saw a rainbow stretch across the sky in Dragonwing Valley like a giant smile! Want to know how it got there? Let's fly into the science of rainbows together!

☀️Rainbows Need Sun and Rain

Rainbows are created when sunlight shines through raindrops in the sky!

First, the sunlight goes into the raindrops in the sky. The light bends when it slows down inside the water. Then, it bounces off the insides of the raindrop back towards the sun. It bends again as it leaves the raindrop and comes back out into the air.

🎨Light is Made of Many Colors

Sunlight looks white, but it's actually made of many colors: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The raindrop splits the light into these colors - like a hidden surprise inside the sunshine!

🌦️That's How We See a Rainbow!

Each little raindrop makes a tiny rainbow. When lots of them do it together, we see one big rainbow in the sky!

🌈Fun Fact:

To see a rainbow, the sun has to be behind you and the rain needs to be in front of you. That's why rainbows are always opposite the sun in the sky!

So next time you see a rainbow, remember: it’s just light showing off its colorful side!
